Blues Welcome Competition Winner to HDP
Margate Football Club were delighted to welcome students from Whitfield Aspen School when we faced Corinthian Casuals in the Isthmian Premier Division last month as part of their competition celebrating Black History Month.
Black History Month is intended to recognise the contribution and achievements of those with African or Caribbean heritage. It's also an opportunity for people to learn more about the effects of racism and how to challenge negative stereotypes.
The pupils of Whitfield Aspen School took part in a competition to design a commemorative shirt that would recognise and highlight the achievements of Walter Tull, now recognised as one of the first black players to play professional football for England, as well as be the first black officer to command white troops in the British Army.
The winner of the competition was Year six student Maici Jones who designed a simple poppy motif with the words “his life did matter” around the collar.
We were delighted to be able to welcome Maici and her classmates to Hartsdown Park as our first team squad warmed up in the winning design ahead of kick off.
Margate Chairman Ricky Owen was delighted to see the students at Hartsdown Park and congratulated Maici for her winning design.
“As a Club we know the importance of Black History Month and how important it is that we see our children in schools being educated on it”.
“The winning design was fantastic and I know the boys loved it too and it is a simple message but one that is so important”.
