INTERVIEW / Taylor Thrilled With Three Points
Taylor Thrilled With Three Points
He has scored an important winner already this season but Joe Taylor’s match-winning strike against Carshalton Athletic had added significance.
Disappointed by his own display against Haringey Borough on Saturday afternoon, Taylor expressed his delight at making amends with an outstanding display on Monday evening.
“I didn’t play that well myself on Saturday. I didn’t work as hard as Mike and Steve wanted me to and that’s what they said to me before today. So, it was nice coming off the pitch and them congratulating me and getting the goal for the work put in today.”
“I was so happy and I think you could see that from my celebration, I don’t think I have ever shouted that loudly before!!”
Causing a nuisance for the Carshalton defence throughout the game, Taylor’s goal was one entirely of his own making.
Positioning himself to add enough pressure on the centre back to cause an error, Taylor demonstrated his ability to convert cooly, when a winner was needed most.
“I haven’t had many of those type of goals recently, so that’s a bonus. That was one of the points Mike wrote down before the game, to chase lost balls because on Saturday when balls were coming up to me, they said that I didn’t chase them down. If you can make a bad ball a good ball, then you’re onto a winner.”
Taylor added, “A couple of the boys have just said to me, where did that pace come from?! But I think once I get going, I am quite quick but over five yards maybe I am a bit more of a hold up player.”
“So it’s nice when it all comes together. Credit to them, they were a good side tonight but we had a point to prove and it all came together and it was buzzing in the changing room after.”
Taylor was full of praise for his team-mates including fellow goal-scorer Frannie Collin. With the two enjoying a good run in the team alongside each other, a dangerous combination is coming together.
“I think that is Frannie’s fourth free kick this season and that’s the first one that’s gone in without a deflection, so I’ve been giving him a bit of stick!”
“But Frannie, like I’ve said before has been first-class this season and his quality on the ball is something I can work with, so having him in the team and around me is a big positive for me.”
Margate’s recent mixed fortunes of results and injuries has meant a lot of resilience has had to be shown early in the campaign. Taylor hopes The Gate can now take advantage of some home fixtures.
“It was disappointing as we thought we could build some momentum on Saturday against Haringey Borough and I don’t think it was because they were strong, we were just not up to it.”
“So, it was important we put in a performance tonight that we can take into the Harlow game. It will be tough, Harlow have beaten Haringey tonight but we will be doing everything we can to get another win.”
