Frustrating 0-0 Draw Sets Up Replay On Tuesday

Frustration for the ‘Gate, as they face a replay in the FA cup First Qualifying Round, following a 0-0 draw against Hayes & Yeading United FC. Complete dominance of the ball and a missed penalty wasn’t enough to advance into the next round of the FA cup.

The final day of summer would bring a sense of optimism around Hartsdown Park, as the Blues looked to continue their cup run, following a 4-0 victory over Loxwood in the previous round. Margate opened the game controlling the ball but they were unable to create any meaningful chances in the first 10.

Hayes & Yeading would have the first opportunity of the match, but their striker wasn’t able to bring the ball under his grasp, which led to a good clearance from the defence.

Just before the 20th minute, Margate would win a penalty. Kai Garande went on one of his marauding runs into the opposition’s penalty area, he was pushed by Hercules which gave the referee no choice other than to point to the spot. Lukas Franzen-Jones stepped up, but saw his tame effort saved, leaving the score at 0-0.

Brandon Davey would be the next to try and break the deadlock, with a low drilled effort just before added time, but Pazio was able to save, keeping the score all tied up going into the interval.

After the 15 minute break, the Blues came out of the blocks, all guns blazing, looking to put United to the sword. Ibrahim Olutade would have the first real chance of the second half. He broke away down the left flank, beat the full back and cut inside to fire a curled shot across goal, Pazio denied him brilliantly with an acrobatic save.

The ‘Gate would have the ball in the net, through a Lukas Franzen-Jones corner, but the ref ruled it out for a foul on a defender on the goal line. Someone had pulled a defender’s shirt leaving them to be on the floor.

With time running out, Margate were throwing as many people forward as they could. Garande would be the next to go close. After receiving the ball wide in the box, he took a speculative effort shooting low and hard at the near post, the ball hit the woodwork and went wide.

In the final minute of the 90, Harry Hudson went on a brilliant run, beating two midfielders in the process. He played a give and go with Harrison Hatfull which led to him being on the edge of the 18-yard box. He fired low and hard but Pazio was there to deny the ‘Gate again.

Even with seven minutes of added time and a bombardment of corners, the ‘Gate were unable to get the job done at home, with the game finishing 0-0.

Margate will now travel to Hayes & Yeading on Tuesday evening to settle who will be going through to the next round of the FA cup.
