Women's Side Defeated In Quarter-Finals
On Saturday a group of Margate FC Women travelled to Sutton United FC after being invited to partake in Puma London Women's 5s tournament.
This was the first year of the tournament which was sponsored by the likes of Monster, Puma, O'Neil's and Signal brewery and was hosted within the Sutton Untied stadium.
In the first round of fixtures The Blues drew one and lost two, however their efforts did not go unnoticed as each game the team conceded no more than two goals, far less than some of their better placed competitors.
The Blues continued to enjoy their football, settling in game after game and soon found themselves drawn in the quarter-final against Wycombe Wanderers A.
Facing a team, one tier higher, it was Margate who netted the first goal. Soon after however Wycombe equalised. Both teams scored again to bring the final score to 2-2 and what happened next was no short of spectacular!
The teams stepped up for a series of penalties. Keeper Montgomery saved the first attempt on goal, followed by 3 Margate players finding the back of the net. The 4th penalty would see the team through to the semis but after hitting the post it was again anyone's game.
Two further saves from both keepers and a total of nine penalties for each team and it was Wycombe Wanderers who took the win, saving the final penalty.
The team represented the club well and upheld a high standard of play against
good teams, a great day was had in the sunshine and we look forward to competing in the event again next year.
