'Gate Rescue Late Point

Margate put in a spirited display to fight back from 3-1 down to earn a 3-3 draw against Haringey Borough at Hartsdown Park on Tuesday night.

The Blues started on the front foot as they look to recover from Saturday’s disappointing defeat at Aveley on Saturday. It was skipper Ben Greenhalgh who saw a free-kick clatter off the post and away to safety early on.

Despite the positive start it was the visitors that took an early lead as Rakim Richards rose highest from a corner to head the visitors in front.

The ‘Gate weren’t behind for long as Greenhalgh levelled in the 15th minute as Korrey Henry played the ball through for Greenhalgh to smash home into the top corner to make it 1-1.

Margate almost turned the game on its head within four minutes as Henry guided a superb header goalwards which was matched superbly by a save by Luke Mewitt.

It was an even end to the first half as both sides tried to hold possession without forcing any clear cut chances as the sides went in level.

The second half started very much the same way as the first ended with neither side able to create any clear cut chances. The closest chance in the opening 15 minutes of the second half as James Bessey-Saldanha weaved in and out of the Haringey defence before shooting wide.

The visitors regained the lead in the 68th minute as on loan Leyton Orient striker Matthew Young unleashed a volley from outside the box past Tangara to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Within two minutes it was 3-1 to the visitors as Tangara superbly saved an original shot from Kennedy only for the ball to fall at the feet of Scott Durojaiye who poked the ball home for the visitors third.

The Blues weren’t set to roll over though and hit back almost instantly as a sweet corner from Greenhalgh was inch perfect for Korrey Henry who sent a bullet header home to reduce the arrears.

The game should have been out of sight in the 89th minute as Kayleigh Hinds somehow blasted over with an open goal, as Margate fans breathed a sigh of relief as the referee indicated there would be five additional minutes to be played.

With the clock running down and time running out it was captain marvel, Greenhalgh once again who stole the show as he delivered an inch perfect cross to Cameron Brodie whose bullet header sent the home side wild and drew Margate level for a remarkable point.
