Lewis Prefers Clean Sheets Over Goals All Knight Long

Margate Defender Lewis Knight says he took more delight in the clubs 1-0 win over Horsham, even though it was him that struck with the last kick of the game to secure the win.

Knight latched onto Joe Gbode’s knockdown to turn and fire the ball home to send the 580 strong crowd into pandemonium, however after a 4-0 loss at Enfield last week, he says he was delighted with the clean sheet.

“You see the scenes at the end and that is great but for me personally and the other boys at the back we were pleased with the clean sheet as we haven’t had one for a while”.

“As Defenders you always want to get clean sheets but I think naturally it is highlighted further after coming off the back of a 4-0 loss”.

Knight is hoping that now Margate have a settled back four, fans will be seeing more clean sheets as the Blues head into the business end of the season.

“COVID and injuries have meant we haven’t always had a settled back four but I feel now that we have we can get more clean sheets under our belts”.

Knight has forged aa strong partnership alongside ‘Gate skipper Ben Swift and he thinks the pairs friendship off the field is helping their cause on the pitch.

“I forget how young Ben is to be skipper but I get along really well with him off the pitch too. I think one being right footed and the other left footed works well together too”.

“We work well as a combination and demand more from each other every time we play together”, he added.

Speaking about his goal, Knight shared that team mate Ben Greenhalgh had joked about his turn in the box, but it was a relief when the ball hit the net.

“It was a great ball in the box by Ben who joked that I turned like the titanic but Joe (Gbode) done well and I just got my head over the ball and was relieved when it went in”.

In an interview with Jay Saunders today, the ‘Gate manager said he was looking for more goals from Knight and it is something the player himself agrees with.

“As a defender you are always looking to up your tally. I am going to try and add as many as I can between now and the end of the season”.

“Myself and Ben (Swift) need to chip in more as you can’t always rely on the strikers to dig you out of trouble every week”.

Much like his Manager, Knight wouldn’t be drawn on play-off talk but instead says focus is now on the next game.

“As a more experienced head in the changing room I try and keep things grounded and certainly don’t go looking at league tables”.

“We can draw on the facts that we have beaten the likes of Worthing and Folkestone but Tuesday night will be tough at Leatherhead who have signed plenty of new players since the new manager went in, so we have to be right for Tuesday”.

Lewis Knight is sponsored this season by Kieron Rocke both Home and Away.
