Saunders Assesses First Run-Out
Margate Manager Jay Saunders was impressed with his side as they began their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against National League South side Welling United.
Saunders handed debuts to all of his summer signings apart from Connor Wilkins who was unavailable, whilst latest signing Michael Abnett confirmed at full time played at right back as Margate set themselves for the Bostik Premier League campaign.
Manager Jay Saunders was impressed by his side against a well organised Welling United, “We all know that the results are not important at this stage but we wanted to give Welling a good game and we certainly done that”.
“There was a lot of new players out there who haven’t played together before and a few trialist's so I was impressed with our performance and we will look to build on that as pre-season progresses.
Saunders was pleased to be able to announce the signing of Michael Abnett at full time and is looking forward to having him in a Blue shirt this season.
“Michael done really well today and will be an asset for us moving forward. He was part of a very successful Merstham side last season and we hope he can enjoy similar success here with us this season”.
Saunders acknowledged that there was plenty of positives to take from the 90 minutes but he will be expecting more from his side as pre-season progresses.
“It was good today and there were many positives across the field, however as we move forward I will expect us to improve our play, our fitness and our patterns of play, but definitely for our first game together I am very happy”.
