Rampant Rams Punish The Gate
By Tom Morris
Under the flood lights on a wet and windy Tuesday evening, Margate U23s were out muscled and out scored by a rampant Ramsgate U23s team losing 4-0.
Straight from the kick off it was clear this was a local derby, as the action was fast and frantic with plenty of meaty tackles flying in from both sides.
It was from a deep free-kick on 14 minutes that Niall Salisbury scored the first of a brace with a pin point header from inside the penalty box.
Things got worse for the Gate on 24 minutes as Damon Todd headed home at the back post to make it 2-0 Ramsgate.
Things went from bad to worse on 26 minutes, as Salisbury scored his second and Ramsgate’s third goal midway through the first half.
The Gate threatened on 34 minutes as Alfie Bird hit a piledriver from all of 25 yards that beat the keeper but smacked the cross bar!
There was little action in the remaining 10 minutes and the sides went in at half time 0-3.
The wind picked up during the half time interval and during the opening exchanges of second half both teams looked dangerous from corners and fashioned several half chances.
Unfortunately for the Gate on 61 minutes, Connor Sanders broke through our defensive line and bundled the ball under the onrushing Joe Twyman.
Both teams made a succession of substitutions to bring on some fresh legs but the game peated out in the last 15 minutes.
The Gate's last chance came on 88 minutes, as Maagbe latched onto a through ball but dragged his shot wide of the post from 20 yards.
The U23’s travel to Hastings on Monday 12th November before going to Lordswood on Saturday 17th in the Youth League Cup.
Margate's next home game is Tuesday 27th November against Cray Wanderers.
