Cawley : "We Showed Some Promising Signs"

Written by Josh Cole

Margate striker Steve Cawley says the second half against Deal Town was “more promising” as the nerves settled down during the first pre-season match at Hartsdown Park.

Cawley netted his first goal for the club after being brought into the action in the second half and he believes the second half saw a much better showing from the Blues.

“I think it went well, second half was obviously better and I think that could be down to nerves in the first half. There were trialists out there looking to impress and maybe thinking about it too much, the weather didn’t help as well it was muggy and horrible.”

“I thought the second half was more promising we attacked better, got on the front foot more, excited the fans, which is what we plan to do for the season.”

Cawley was delighted to get off the mark with a trademark finish inside the box where he says the management “expect” him to be, and feels he should’ve had a second which was ruled out for offside.

“I think Ben and Reece want me to stay more central in between the centre halves and pick up the seconds and thirds in the box and use me as a decoy to let younger ones run in behind.”

“I’m hoping to pick up a lot more goals with my head throughout the season, a free header in the six-yard box, was nice and easy.”

The ’Gate have got a lot of games during this pre-season schedule and Cawley believes matches in quick succession will help the side prepare for the new season and that matches are more beneficial than the “dreaded” 5k runs.

“Pre-season is better when you play more games, it’s where you get your match fitness, these 5k runs are good for base fitness but not suitable for the challenges you face in a match scenario.”

“Matches in quick succession emulates what you see in a season so I think it’s good we’ve gone in this direction.”

Cawley is excited to work with his good friend Reece Prestedge again and says seeing him as a manager and a different person is “amazing” and believes the “sky is the limit” for the boss.

“I’m excited to work with the boys and play under Prezza, I love Prezza, known him a few years now, seeing him as a manager and a different person is amazing seeing that personality coming out and I think the sky’s the limit for him as a manager.”

“He’s got a great group of lads here, the atmosphere in the changing room is great and I think that earns you 12-15 more points in a season so its going to be enjoyable.”

Steve and the lads are back in action tomorrow as we face our tenants Canterbury City FC at Hartsdown Park. Gates are open from 6:30pm or you can purchase your ticket by clicking here
