U23's Win In The Michael Britt Memorial Cup
By Paul Meade
Margate U23's completed their pre season fixtures last night against Baypoint in the Michael Britt Memorial Cup.
The game was played out in front of a very well supported crowd of 150 in memory of Michael who played for both teams before being taken from us all too early.
Margate with many new faces from last season started very brightly and went ahead in the 11th minute through a Kodie Bristow far post header after cross between Jamie Summers.
It was Summers himself who scored with a well placed left foot drive from Reece Greig's lofted pass to make it 2-0 in the 17th minute.
The 'Gate's third goal in the first half was a superb free kick into the top right hand corner from Lou Mirza in the 33rd minute when the lively Woody Pitman was brought down.
Several changes at halftime and during the second half made the game a bit more inconsistent but Margate still created chances with Pitman hitting the post from a free kick which was won by a positive drive by centre-mid Luke Harvey and Tom Goulette's goal-bound shot was headed off the line.
The game was played in an excellent spirit and reminded before and during the game of the respect for the occasion.
Margate now move onto their opening league fixture away to Deal Town on Thursday evening.
