Friends Reunited At HDP

Returning Margate defender Liam Friend admits he is “happy” to be back in a Margate shirt after re-joining the Blues from local rivals Ramsgate on New Year’s Day.

Friend had left Margate in the summer to join a new look Rams side, however he is now happy to be back at Hartsdown Park and playing football for Jay Saunders and Mike Sandmann.

“I am really happy to be back at Margate, I never wanted to leave in the summer but in terms of my work commitments the training and the games were more local but I am glad to be back and playing with this squad”.

“The squad that Jay and Mike have assembled since I left has been much younger but they have so much ability and the potential is clear to see”.

After leaving Ramsgate in December, Friend had offers from other clubs but an injury to Ben Swift on Boxing Day led to contact from the club and he never looked back from there.

“As soon as I heard from Jay and Mike there was no other option in my head and things moved really quickly from there. I played against Cray on New Year’s Day and we were poor defensively, but at Bognor we showed a lot of resilience and come away with a great 2-1 win”.

With the Blues ten points off the BetVictor Premier play-off places, Friend admits it is now about just winning every game and seeing where it will take the Blues this season.

“No one has come out publicly or in secret and said we should be achieving this or that. We know that we will take it one game at a time and hopefully get one win at a time. Tomorrow's opponents are a prime example of what this division is all about, where any team can beat anyone”

“East Thurrock came down from the National League South and probably thought they would be much higher but they have been like most teams and inconsistent so they will be disappointed to mid-table”.

Friend admits with lots of positive news off the field for the club, especially the introduction of the new history kit on Tuesday evening which the players wore in a 5-1 win over Carshalton in the Velocity Trophy, the squad must transfer that positive feeling onto the pitch.

“Margate is a big club and with so much positive news off it, we as a squad need to transfer that onto the pitch and make sure we are winning games so the supporters can enjoy that as well”.

“The kit looked great and was well received so it was great for everyone at the club to see it come together and now we want to continue Tuesday night’s performance into what will be a difficult game against East Thurrock on Saturday”.
