Non-League Day to help cure blood cancer

Margate Football Club is delighted to unveil plans to dedicate Non-League Day to raising awareness of blood cancer and the excellent work being done by blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan.

Non-League Day was set up in 2010 and has become an annual part of the football calendar. Always scheduled to coincide with an international break, Non-League Day provides a platform for clubs to promote the importance of affordable, volunteer-led community football, while giving fans across the country the chance to show support for their local non-league side.

This season, Non-League Day falls on Saturday 13 October, the date Margate host Enfield Town at Hartsdown Park. The club will be using the occasion to show support for Chairman Terry Painter and his family whilst fundraising for Anthony Nolan.

Many fans of the football club will have read the Chairman’s Notes a month ago, informing supporters that Terry will be taking a step back from the football club for a few months. This decision was made following the devastating news that Terry’s grandson has been diagnosed with blood cancer.

Terry’s grandson has undergone an urgent a bone marrow transplant and is receiving expert care and treatment in London, with Terry dedicated to supporting his family during this extremely difficult time.

Margate FC will be dedicating the non-league day to support our Chairman and Anthony Nolan at the first-team’s Bostik League game. It is hoped supporters, residents and members of the wider Margate community will get behind this charitable initiative, using the power of football – and Non-League Day - to have a positive impact whilst enjoying a great game of football.

For one game only, the club will be offering a “Pay What You Like” entry with 50% donated to the charity.

Besides raising valuable funds via ticket entry, first team players will be warming up in Anthony Nolan shirts which will be signed and gifted to supporters via a match-day raffle, with all proceeds going to the charity.

The club will also be putting a range of unique prizes up for auction online and encouraging donations online. Supporters are encouraged to stay tuned for further information about how to bid on prizes and get further involved with the day.

Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with blood cancer, such as leukaemia, by matching them to people willing to donate their bone marrow, or blood stem cells, for a lifesaving transplants.

It also carries out pioneering research to increase stem cell transplant success, and supports patients through their transplant journeys.

Lawrie Mallyon, Senior Community Fundraising Manager at Anthony Nolan, said, ‘We are so delighted that Margate FC is fundraising in aid of Anthony Nolan. Every penny raised will help us undertake lifesaving research, recruit more donors and provide vital support to patients and their families.

‘Fundraising is a vital part of our lifesaving work – the more money we raise, the more potential donors we can recruit onto the stem cell register, giving people in desperate need a second chance of life.’

Besides all of this, we have some great drink offers this Saturday. From between 13.30-14.30 and 17.00-18.00 enjoy the following prices:

  • £3.00 a pint
  • Sourz and sambuca 3 for £5
  • £3.00 per single serve of wine
  • Jäger 4 for £10
