Celebrating Walter Tull At HDP
For Black History Month, Whitfield Aspen School celebrated the life of Walter Tull, a local boy from Folkestone.
Walter was one of the first Black Premier League footballers and the first Black officer in the British Army.
Pupils spent the month learning about Walter, using their knowledge of his significance to design a football shirt to commemorate him. The school created a timeline celebrating the past, present and future of role models of black footballers in sport.
The children used their curiosity, investigation and touch to begin to understand how we are all different to one another. Children used the Walter Tull assemblies to learn to appreciate how Walter made an impact to the local area and nationally, despite being discriminated against.
To reward their fantastic work, we are delighted to say pupils from the school will be coming to a game in the New Year. The winner of the school's t-shirt competiton Maici, will see the players wearing her design in the warm up against Corinthian Casuals on Saturday 22nd January.
The winner and runners-up designs will be in our match day programme and the runners-up will have the chance to be a ball boy/girl for The Gate and will walk out with the team.
Maici, her family and friends will meet our Captain Ben Swift and have a photo with the players wearing her shirt.
