U23's Suffer Slender Defeat To Faversham

U23

Report by Paul Meade

A young Margate U23s lost at home 1-0 in a tightly contested top of the table clash against a strong Faversham side at Hartsdown Park on Tuesday night.

In an even first half there were chances for both teams but the clearer ones for Margate.

Despite this Faversham scored, to be what turned out, the only goal of the game on 28mins after a great save from Freddie Marsh, he could only parry it back to an oncoming forward to loop his header into open goal.

Both goalkeepers were in excellent form with Wes Hennessy and Harvey Bridger both being denied an equaliser.

Faversham thought they had scored a second direct from a free kick but Marsh pulled off the save of the night to deny the visitors going in 2-0 down at halftime.

Second half Margate started brightly and looked the sharper team searching for an equaliser, however, clear cut chances were few and far between with Faversham finishing the stronger.

Injuries and work commitments meant full league debuts for George Hunt at fullback and U16 Leo Moore at centre back with both excelling and looking comfortable in and out of possession.

Margate U23’s return to action on Thursday 23rd February away to East Grinstead.
