Delight With Enfield Win
Joint Manager Mike Sandmann was delighted with his team’s work on Non-League Day at Hartsdown Park.
The Gate displayed quality and resilience in equal measure as they beat a hotly tipped - and previously unbeaten - Enfield side on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking after the victory, Sandmann said:
“It was a fantastic performance with the right result to match. Enfield are a strong side and we fully expect them to be right up there at the end of the season.”
“You can see why they’re unbeaten, they’re a resilient team but credit to our players, their performances merited the result. Enfield threw everything at us and we managed to pick them off.”
Hard work on the training ground came to fruition as a Joe Taylor brace secured the 2-1 result. Sandmann was pleased with the way the Margate side implemented lessons learned from previous weeks.
“We have spoken a lot about intensity and the players have been disappointed in recent displays. Saying that, before today we took seven points out of twelve which takes us to 10 in 15, so two points a game. We always look at five games at a time and we would have taken that.”
“You can always look back and think we should have picked up points here and there but we’re in and around the play-off spots which is where we want to be. We hope to build a run together where we can cement that position.”
The win was especially sweet considering the number of injuries affecting the Margate squad, yet the return of Tom Wynter, George Brown and Alex Flisher’s improvements week on week, give lots for supporters to look forward to as the campaign continues.
“That’s as sharp as Flish has looked for us coming back from injury. He is getting stronger and fitter which is a huge plus for us. He puts his body in and is a very good player at this level. The quicker we can get him fit and able to start games, the better for us.”
“We have really struggled with injuries. Alex Brown and Kane Haysman are big losses. Rojo is awaiting a date for his operation so could be another eight to ten weeks, Pax took an injury and wasn’t fully fit.”
“We’d like a more fit squad to pick from, what we’ve got is what we’ve got but if the players can perform like that week to week then we have no need to look anywhere else.”
Looking ahead to Margate’s upcoming games, Sandmann relishes the prospect for his squad to show what they’re all about.
“We go to Bogner which is going to be a very tough place, we know what they’re all about and then Hornchurch come to Harstdown on the Tuesday.”
“So, we’ve got two tricky games back-to-back but they’re the type of games if we want to be the right end of the table at the send of the season, we have to perform in and we look forward to it.”
