Saunders Pleased With Three Points

Manager Jay Saunders praised his side after they secured back-to-back victories with a hard-fought three points at Cheshunt on Saturday.

A Kadell Daniel brace ensured victory for The Gate and Saunders was pleased with the way his team applied themselves in the BetVictor Isthmian League game.

“First and foremost, I am delighted that we managed to come away with three points on Saturday. Once again the lads had to cope with injuries and applied themselves very well after the changes I had to make.

"It was definitely a game of two halves and we were a little bit lucky not to go in at half time two or even three goals down.”

Travelling Margate fans have already seen the talents of on loan keeper Joe Tupper and Jay was especially pleased with his performance.

“Joe made a good save to deny them from the penalty spot and although we conceded shortly afterwards, it was a big save early on in a half.

Saunders admitted, "We struggled to get to grips with their midfield” a task that was made even harder when midfielder Jordy Robins was forced off with an injury after only eight minutes.

“At half time we had a good talk with the lads about our performance and what I expected them to do better in the second half. I thought we were creating a few half chances and just needed to be more clinical and we would get back into the game.”

Saunders made a decisive switch on 51 minutes, replacing Jack Richards with Daniel as he explained why Kadell started the fixture on the bench.

“Kads trained away from the group on Thursday and still felt a slight tightening in his muscle. With a big FA Cup game on Saturday against Concord, we decided it was best for him to start from the bench. But you can see the quality he brings to the team and I am pleased for him that he got two goals”

Daniel scored the equaliser and a late winner courtesy of a 93rd minute penalty as Saunders expressed his delight with the way his team fought to the bitter end.

"We fought up until the very last minute, the lads never gave up and showed a real determination and fighting spirit to grind out the win."

"It may not be the prettiest of games to watch back but getting three points and a win before an FA Cup weekend is the perfect preparation.”

The Margate squad is currently hit with a number of injuries ahead of next week's home game against Vanarama National League South side, Concord Rangers.

"Sessegnon and Swifty are 3-4 weeks away, Michael Abnett is back in training this week and Kudos should be available for a place on the bench come Saturday. Jordy Robins and Jack Richards will be assessed in the week and a decision made on Thursday regarding their inclusion.”
