Blackman: "Concord A Tough Test

By Josh Cole

Despite losing 4-1 at Hornchurch on Tuesday, Margate captain Sam Blackman said the final result “didn’t reflect the game”.

“It’s disappointing especially when people will look at the scoreline but in fact the result didn’t really reflect the game but they are a good side, probably favourites to win the league.”

“I think half-time came at the wrong time just as we were getting on top and it killed our momentum, we’re disappointed but we have a chance to put it right on Saturday against Concord so we will focus on that.”

Blackman sys that the goals conceded were “avoidable” but added that they were “team mistakes” rather than individual ones which are easier to put right.

“I said it last week, I think all the goals we have conceded are avoidable, but they’re team mistakes rather than individual ones, so we need to get better at defending crosses and corners as a unit which can be put right in training.”

The Captain believes Margate have a tough opening fixtures and that results shouldn’t be “judged” until the first ten league games have been played.

“We’ve had two tough games to start the season and we’ve got one win and one loss, I don’t think we should read too much into that until game week ten which is where you roughly know where you are and how you face up to the competition in the table, it’s a long season so at the minute we are focusing on getting the performances to where we want them to be and then we will judge our results from there, it’s a long season”.

Blackman is looking forward to facing his old team Concord at the weekend, and says that despite their tough start they shouldn’t be “overlooked.”

“I used to play for them so I know what its like, it’s going to be a tough test, it’s a tight pitch, an interesting ground and it has all the characteristics to make it a tough game for us, but the boys are up for the challenge they pose and it’s a massive game for both teams as we both lost tonight so getting the three points is crucial.”

You can join Sam Blackman and the boys at Concord on Saturday by travelling with the supporter’s club at a cost of £25 for non-members and £20 for Supporters Club Members. You can book your seat by emailing Terry Scott on SEREPHINA2001@YAHOO.CO.UK

Sam Blackman is sponsored by Toni Jones at Home and James Green Away for the 2023/24 season.
