MATCH PREVIEW / Tonbridge Angels (A) - 20th January 2024
Tonbridge Angels (A) - 20th January 2024
By David Hansen
Tuesday night sees Margate Women take to the road, as they travel to The Longmead Stadium for a third round match in the Combined Counties Cup against Tonbridge Angels.
Margate Women will be looking to turn their fortunes around. Following 3 consecutive league defeats, now may be a good time to look towards the cup competitions. They will have to do it the hard way though. With Tonbridge Angels beating Staplehurst Monarchs 12-2 in the previous round. Tonbridge Angels Women come into the match with a couple of quality wins. With a 2-0 win against Tunbridge Well Foresters 2nds and a 12-0 win against Danson Sports, in the SECWFL Kent Division 1 West.
As previously stated, Margate come into the tie off the back of 3 defeats. With a 4-0 loss to Sevenoaks Town, and a 2-1 loss against Maidstone United. As well as a 4-1 defeat to Tunbridge Wells Foresters, all of which were at home.
It's clear to see why Tonbridge Angels are doing so well this campaign. As they’ve only conceded 12 goals in the league this season. Giving them a +71-goal-difference, and 31 points leaving them top of the league.
Steph Meek had her say ahead of the midweek clash:
“Everyone loves a night under the lights, there is a real sense of excitement and anticipation for this fixture which is doubled by the fact it is a cup game. A win here will see the team reach a third semi-final this season, quite some achievement if you ask me and that solely down to the girls, their drive, determination and the beautiful football they play.”
“Tonbridge Angels are a side we know little about competitively due to their recent reformation and they also play in a different league to ourselves, but I have taken the time to analyse what's available to me and base tactics and formations around that knowledge.”
“To the team, this is a routine fixture, they will be told to focus and work hard from the off as Tonbridge Angels will be fighting for triumph here too!”
“We will see the introduction of our new coach, Dan Smith, in this fixture too which I am personally excited about. He's got a wealth of experience and knowledge to share and will bring a driven and focused yet positive ethos to the team.”
“A win will put us on a really good footing heading into cup fixture 2 of 3 this coming Sunday.”
