Vasiliou: "Time To Progress"

Vasiliou: "Time To Progress"

By Riley Finch

A technical number-ten like Martin Odegaard with the pace and flair of Raheem Sterling, meet your new Blue Antonis Vasiliou.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder joins Margate after leaving Wingate & Finchley in the summer.

In Vasiliou's first interview since joining, he said: "I'm really happy to sign for the club, I remember playing against Margate last year and I hated playing against them. They gave us tough games; they beat us twice."

"I'm excited to get started with the lads, kick-on and hope the team progresses to keep them in the play-off places. Just excited to get going.".

Vasiliou started his career with Barnet, progressing through their youth ranks before breaking into their first-team squad.

The midfielder spent time on loan at St Albans, Beaconsfield, Ashford Town and Wingate before joining them permanently last summer.

Vasiliou, nicknamed Vas, had a lot of interest from other clubs this Summer, so why Margate?

"Last season they were tough to play against, like I said, they beat us twice.

"I spoke to the manager last week and he was talking about my role on a matchday and in the squad being the exciting player I can be.

"They play the right type of football which is important for me as a player. I just want to go out there without much pressure and express myself, be the player I know I can be, play football and just enjoy it.

"What Ben and the gaffer have spoken about previously, the vision that is there, we are all on the same page. We just want success. I want to progress and see the club progress and there is a good feeling around the club at the moment that we can do that.

"I played against Margate away last season and there were quite a few fans, that was also appealing to me."

Vasiliou could make his debut tonight when we face Cheshunt in our fourth match of the new season.

On what Blues fans can except should the attacking midfielder start tonight, Vas said:

"Expect exciting football, lots of runs in behind.

"I love to be on the ball and the fans will see the excitement, aiming to get past a player.

"I also do the ugly side as well because you need to be an all rounded player."

The exciting attacking-midfielder scored nine goals last season and is aiming for double figure this campaign: " Definitely want to kick on into double figures, I know I can produce in front of goal and score lots of chances."

Everyone at Margate would like to welcome Antonis to Hartsdown Park, with a warm welcome.

"I'm really excited to join and start playing. I can see a lot of success both for myself and the club this season."
