Women Suffer Parkwood Defeat
Margate FC Women suffered a 2-1 defeat on the road on Sunday afternoon away at Parkwood Rangers.
After two home wins on the bounce, the 'Gate faced Parkwood in their 2nd away match of the season. Squad injuries left the side with a bare 11 at kick-off and the match was set to be a test of mentality and resilience.
Playing in a new formation the side struggled to settle and play was not as fast paced and precise as the side has become known for. The 'Gate struggled to keep the ball on the deck and it was the home side who kept majority of possession in the early stages.
With just 15 minutes on the clock, Paige Godden suffered an injury, forcing the Blues to play manager Steph Meek
Despite the slow start, a good defensive set up saw the game remain goalless at half-time with both sides having their fair share of attempts on goal.
The second half saw a slight change in formation but it was apparent that the fresh legs of a well stacked sub bench would be an advantage to the home side. Quickly into the second half a strong string of attacking play saw Parkwood net the first goal with a headed effort that beat a stunned keeper in the centre of the goal.
Shortly after, Parkwood put a second in the back of the net taking their lead to two goals.
The 'Gate kept things flowing and remained composed with plenty of forward play.
With twenty minutes remaining, skipper Slevin powered the ball into the bottom left corner after beating several players inside the 18-yard box to half the deficit.
The final 15 minutes saw The 'Gate find their feet and look the strongest they had all game. Multiple through balls found the feet of Kew-Stroud, Speller & Scales but a determined Parkwood were able to block all attempts as the Blues dell to their first defeat of the season.
Attention now turns to the Women’s Vitality FA Cup Second Qualifying Round fixture at home to Bromleians on Sunday at Hartsdown Park.
