U23's Beat Punjab In Kent Intermediate Cup

U23

By Paul Meade

Margate U23’s continued with another away fixture this time at Punjab United U23’s in The Kent Intermediate Cup.

With imminent storm force rain expected the fixture had moved onto the training pitch.

This didn’t deter the young ‘Gate squad and they started with great energy and high pressing.

This tactic looked like it was the correct one as Iman Alam was put through on goal in the 18th min, one-on-one but his shot was saved by the feet of oppositions ‘keeper.

Margate were looking in control of the game with some excellent interchanges between Edu Chidubum, Hoxha and striker Pitman.

It was Pitman who finally broke the deadlock on 23 mins after a cross-field pass from Reece Grieg was perfectly controlled by the ever-lively Iman and his cross was slotted home by Pitman.

It was less than three minutes later that ‘Gate’s lead should have been doubled after good work between Tom Handley and Iman saw Pitman this time see his effort put over the bar.

Although Margate were dominant and should have really been 3-0 up it was Punjab who grabbed an equaliser with the strikers first time shot which gave Blake Winter no chance.

Margate hit back immediately with Geddes towering above the opposition defence to head home, only to be disallowed for a foul on the defender.

The second half started just as the first with shots saved by the keeper from Greig, Pitman and Hoxha.

The ‘Gate’s second and eventual winner came on 73 mins after a long throw from Tyler Lee was flicked on by Pitman for Chidu to run onto and his right foot drive was unstoppable.

There were still more chances for Margate and Iman long range effort was flicked onto the post and out for corner, but the game would finish 2-1 to Margate!
