Roberts: "Gaffer Has Instilled High Standards"

Margate striker Phil Roberts says Margate “weathered the storm” against Hornchurch and showed everybody in the Isthmian Premier Division what they are capable of after recovering from 2-0 at half-time to beat the current league leaders 3-2 last weekend.

Two goals from Ben Greenhalgh, including a 40-yard strike, and a header from Sam Blackman turned the game on its head, and Roberts says he had belief that a performance like that was coming.

“We had lost three in a row, but even then I was thinking we didn’t play bad in those games and I think we all felt that a performance like Saturday was due, and we showed teams in this league what we are capable of.”

Roberts praised the “belief” that Manager Reece Prestedge and Assistant Manager Greenhalgh had instilled into the side since taking over.

“The gaffers have instilled in us the belief that we can win any game. Between them they have brought in some quality and they have instilled into us as players that they have high standards for what playing for Margate means and that has filtered down into our performances on the pitch”.

This Saturday sees play-off chasing Lewes head to Hartsdown Park, and Roberts believe the momentum from last Saturday’s win will help the Blues in their bid to claim another three points.

“Our win at Hornchurch will give us that extra belief that we can beat a good team like Lewes. They are in the race for the play-offs, but we are the home side and we won’t let them dictate to us how we play at home”.

“We generally start very well at home and that will be the case this weekend where we will set the tempo and try and get the first goal and build on it from there”.

Don’t forget we are hosting our annual Easter egg hunt at Hartsdown Park on Saturday with all the fun beginning at 2pm, ahead of the match against Lewes at 3pm.
