Margate’s Emirates FA Cup journey came to an early end on Tuesday night, as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Cobham in the Extra-Preliminary Round.
Manager Ben Greenhalgh was forced into changes before kick-off, with defender Lewis Knight only fit enough for the bench through illness, while Louie Atkins remained sidelined with a knee injury. Tom Derry also began among the substitutes, as Greenhalgh altered his side’s shape to accommodate the returning Ben Wells.
It was a cagey opening ten minutes at Hartsdown Park, with few clear-cut chances for either side. Margate produced the first opportunity as Sam Blackman cushioned a header down for TT Walters, who fired well wide from the edge of the box.
Cobham offered little going forward in the opening exchanges, though the Blues also struggled to create. Margate felt aggrieved when Ibrahim Olutade was bundled over inside the area, but the referee waved play on.
On the half-hour mark, the visitors struck the decisive blow. A loose ball inside the Margate box wasn’t cleared, and Louis Toissant reacted quickest to prod home and put Cobham in front.
Margate looked to respond before the break, and when Olutade nodded a header into Blackman’s path, the midfielder struck a half-volley narrowly over. The Blues went in at half-time frustrated and trailing by a single goal.
As has been the case in recent weeks, Margate began the second half with much greater intensity. In the 54th minute, Greenhalgh’s corner almost found its way straight in, only for Cobham’s goalkeeper to claw it away at full stretch. Moments later, Greenhalgh’s teasing cross picked out Olutade, whose glancing header drifted inches wide of the far post.
Just after the hour, the home side were convinced they had won a penalty when Walters was brought down inside the box, but once again the referee dismissed the strong appeals to the disbelief of the Hartsdown faithful.
With 18 minutes remaining, Harrison Hatfull threaded a clever ball through to Walters, whose driven cross fizzed across the face of goal but evaded everyone arriving in the six-yard box.
As the game entered stoppage time, Margate thought they had finally found the equaliser when a corner was bundled into the net, but the referee awarded Cobham a free-kick for an alleged foul on the goalkeeper.
There was more late drama deep into added time as Kai Garande’s close-range strike ricocheted off two defenders before crashing against the post and away to safety.
Despite relentless pressure in the closing stages, Cobham held firm to secure their place in the next round, leaving Margate to reflect on a frustrating evening where the chances — and key decisions — didn’t fall their way.
