Margate make the trip to Holm Park for the second time this season on Saturday, as we face Sheppey United – this time in Isthmian South-East league action.
The two sides previously met at the start of September in the Velocity Cup, where the hosts edged the tie on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time.
While Sheppey have found more joy in cup competitions – most recently progressing to the third round of the Velocity Cup with a 1-0 win at Herne Bay – their league form has proven more difficult. United currently sit just one place above the drop zone, with six points from six games. However, it’s worth noting that all of those points came from strong home wins: a 4-0 victory over Ashford United and a 2-1 triumph against Sittingbourne.
Prior to their win last week, Sheppey had endured a tough spell in the league, losing three consecutive matches and conceding 14 goals – including a 7-1 defeat at Three Bridges.
Margate arrive at Holm Park in fine form, unbeaten in four matches across all competitions. In the league, we’ve taken seven points from a possible nine, following home victories over VCD Athletic and Sevenoaks Town, and a hard-fought goalless draw away at Faversham Town. That run has lifted us to 7th in the Isthmian South-East table.
Last season, the two teams met three times. Margate came out on top in both league encounters, winning 3-2 on each occasion. However, Sheppey again had the upper hand in the Velocity Cup, winning at Hartsdown Park in November.
Manager Ben Greenhalgh is hopeful that his squad’s injury list is easing, with defender Kai Garande in line for a return. The returns of Sam Blackman and Louie Atkins last week provided another timely boost. However, Max Walsh and Kieron Agbebi remain sidelined and are expected to be at least a week away from full fitness.

Before kick-off, both teams and supporters will pause for a minute’s silence in memory of Chichester City player Billy Vigar, who tragically passed away this week. Everyone at Margate FC was devastated to hear of Billy’s passing, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all connected to Chichester City at this incredibly difficult time.
