Stoppage Time Defeat For 'Gate At Haringey
Margate slipped to a 1-0 defeat away to Haringey Borough on Good Friday as a stoppage time goal ended their recent resurgent form.
Reece Prestedge introduced Harvey Smith into the starting eleven as a replacement for the injured Phil Roberts as they looked to make it three unbeaten.
In the spring sunshine this game had a feel of an end of season fixture to it from the start with neither side having nothing to play for apart from league points and mid-table positions.
Both sides started in an even fashion with neither side creating any real clear cut chances, however it was the Blues who perhaps looked more threatening as Ruben Soares-Junior and Ben Greenhalgh saw efforts test the hosts keeper.
George Aresti looked the most likely to force a Haringey effort as he played the ball forward well, however the game was meandering towards half-time as both sides went in level.
Margate started much brighter as Soares-Junior forced an early save in the second half as the Blues looked to go in search of three points that could have seen them rise to 13th in the league standings.
In the 50th minute, Margate should have gone ahead as Soares-Junior linked up well with Nathan Wood who was one on one with the hosts keeper, however the ball hit his standing foot, allowing Alex Zamani to make a good save to divert the ball wide for a corner.
Margate continued to create half chances, however it was the hosts that snatched the three points during the six minutes of added time as the impressive Aresti cut the ball back to Samuel Owusu who slotted home to make it 1-0.
The drama wasn’t done there though as Greenhalgh picked Smith out who superbly chipped the ball over Zamani, however the assistant referee raised his flag to deny Margate a deserved point.
We return to action on Bank Holiday Monday as we welcome Kent rivals Folkestone Invicta to Hartsdown Park for a 3pm kick-off.
