INTERVIEW / Wynter Returns To Action
Wynter Returns To Action
It was a comeback made slightly earlier than anticipated but defender Tom Wynter returned from injury when needed on Saturday to help Margate secure a clean sheet on a drizzly afternoon at Hartsdown Park.
As the injury merry-go-round continues to spin for The Blues this campaign, Wynter returned from a calf injury to replace right-back Jack Paxman who was forced from the field of play with a dead leg.
Slotting into the back four with seeming ease, the versatile defender was pleased to get through the contest having only just made it on to the bench, as he revealed after the game.
“It was a close call whether I was going to feature or not, as I’ve only just returned to full training on Thursday but the squad is pretty low on numbers already and the decision proved to be the right one.”
“Pax has had a great start to the season, so it was disappointing to see another player injured but hopefully it is nothing too serious.”
Reflecting on the 90 minutes as a whole, Wynter said:
“It was not the best spectacle by any stretch but still when you’re playing in those conditions, you just want to make sure you stay organised and limit any opportunities. It can only take a slip or something like that to allow a team in.”
“But we didn’t give them too much at all and I’m glad I could come on and help us keep a clean sheet. I watched the boys on Monday night and they put in a great shift them. It took a penalty to break them down, so it is a positive for our defence and something we want to build upon.”
In a game lacking any clear-cut opportunities for both teams, Wynter admitted he and his team-mates were disappointed not to show more cutting edge in the final third.
“It feels like a missed opportunity. We dominated possession for long periods but just couldn’t find a way to break the deadlock. I think if we could have nudged ahead, we would have gone on and maybe got a couple but it wasn’t meant to be.”
“It feels like we have shown glimpses of what we can do as a team. It’s hard to build momentum when the injuries have cut in and disrupted things a bit, but we will get there.”
“As a squad, we know we have to lift things to dictate games when we can. We want to draw together a run of performances and with Enfield next weekend, we know they’ll be a really tough test but it is a perfect opportunity to do so.”
