INTERVIEW / Friend Delighted With Goal
Friend Delighted With Goal
Captain Liam Friend was delighted to grab the goal to carry on Margate’s good form in the Bostik League and seal another valuable point on the road.
Friend’s second half header proved decisive as The Blues drew 1-1 at Merstham on Wednesday evening.
Whilst the centre-back was thrilled with his goal, he felt The Gate could have got more after a decent second half display.
“I’m delighted to score, especially as the goal brings us back a point against a good side. After the first half, we would have definitely taken the draw, but I thought we could have pinched a win, I even came close to another which would have been something!”
“Credit to Merstham, they showed that they are a good side and it took character from the boys to turn the game around and impose ourselves in the second half. I think we did that, and their keeper has ended up been the busier of the two.”
Friend and several of his team-mates are carrying knocks and niggles and whilst it is challenging, the Skipper is believes the squad’s togetherness is helping drive battling performances.
“We’re certainly the walking wounded at the moment and the games are coming thick and fast, added to that the fact we’re travelling three times in seven days, but that is football and the boys are taking it in their stride.”
“We will always battle, there are no doubts about that. The injuries are of course frustrating, but it is what is, and we have to deal with it and do what we can over each 90 minutes as and when they come.”
Looking ahead to Saturday’s journey to Kingstonian, Friend is well aware another demanding performance will be required.
“Kingstonian will be yet another tough game. They’ve lost tonight, so will be looking to bounce back and we will have to be at our best from the off.”
“Hopefully we can pick up where we left on this evening because there are a lot of positives to take from that second half.”
