'Gate See Off Canvey At HDP

Margate made it two wins from two on Saturday afternoon as they overcome Canvey Island 2-0 at Hartsdown Park in the Isthmian Premier Division.

Fresh from their 1-0 win away at Corinthian Casuals it was the Blues that again started on the front foot with Ben Greenhalgh and Korrey Henry looking to cause some early troubles for the visiting defence.

Taylor Fisher again started with a licence to thrill down the left hand side and he saw his delightful cross headed goalwards by Greenhalgh as the ‘Gate took the game to Canvey.

Despite their early pressure, Margate had goalkeeper Daniel Jinadu to thank for staying level as he forced a fierce shot onto the crossbar as the visitors showed their potential when going forward.

The half ticked by with neither side forcing many more chances as they went in level after 45 minutes.

The second half started with much more pace to it and chances as Greenhalgh caught the Canvey ‘keeper off his line, however he couldn’t quite find the height to lift the ball over him and into the net.

In a frantic five minutes that followed, both sides were reduced to ten men as Sam Blackman was giving his marching orders first for a second booking, just minutes before Mason Hall was shown his second yellow for a deliberate handball. To add to chaotic start to the second half, the Canvey Island Manager was then sent from the touchline for arguing the referee’s decision on the Hall red card.

Margate looked to build on their win in the week and took the lead in the 67th minute as the visiting ‘keeper appeared to spill the ball straight to the feet of Henry who stabbed the ball home to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.

The hosts were in the ascendency and almost doubled their lead moments later as again Greenhalgh spotted the visiting ‘keeper wandering away from his goal line, however this time his lofted effort was tipped onto the crossbar and away for a corner.

The ‘Gate secured all three points with nine minutes remaining as Eddie Dsane weaved through the visiting back-line before seeing his effort parried straight to Greenhalgh who made no mistake to wrap up the win for the Blues and move them up to 10th in the Isthmian Premier Division standings.
