Margate overcome Kent rivals Folkestone Invicta with a 1-0 win after an entertaining cup tie at Hartsdown Park. The Blues made it 5 wins in 5 games in all competitions.

Despite Margate’s win, the visitors started the game better, after Ayoola with a great turn and getting his shot off, fortunately for the hosts, the shot flew wide. Minutes later, Folkestone threatened with a corner, with a scrappy fight within the box, Dan Jinadu makes a great point blank save.

After a slow first ten minutes for Margate, they got their foot hold onto the game, with James Bessey-Saldanha threatening down the left-hand side, with a great cut back, but unfortunately cleared away by the visitors. The first big chance of the game for the Blues saw Korrey Henry brought down running through on goal before being hauled down. Skipper Ben Greenhalgh struck it but it was well defended by the visitors, but the ball looped up and Cameron Brodie headed just wide of the goal.

After 26 minutes, Margate took the lead! After a great switch pass from Greenhalgh, with James Bessey-Saldanha bearing down on goal and slotted it past Folkestone’s keeper Bailey Vose.

Before half time, Folkestone have a golden chance with the ball falling to an attacker, Dan Jinadu out of his goal, and Margate’s left back Taylor Fisher’s heroic defending cleared the ball of the line. Moments later, the referee blew up for Half-Time, after a typical cup-tie feeling from the first half.

Margate started the 2nd half the better with three half chances within the first ten minutes, Korrey Henry headed wide, then moments later, Cameron Brodie headed just wide from a brilliant cross from Greenhalgh. Three minutes later, Taylor Fisher went striding down the left side, unluckily crossed, with the ball hitting both feet, which went behind.

Both sides were reduced to ten men in the 56th minute as Ade Cole and Robbie Dolan were shown red acrds for their involvement in a brawl on the pitch. Going into the last twenty minutes of the game, Ben Greenhalgh once again threatened down the right, with a beautiful delivery which Brodie headed inches wide.,

Minutes later, Folkestone had the ball in the back of the net, with a great header from Davies, but the linesman flagged the goal offside, which halted the celebrations very quickly.

Margate held on, with an extra seven-minute additional time, but the hosts were defensively strong, with an outstanding win sending Margate through to the Quarter Finals of the Velocity Trophy.
