Bessey-Saldanha: "I want to score more goals"
Margate goal scorer James Bessey-Saldanha says he holds himself to “high standards” as he looks to improve further on his impressive recent form.
Bessey-Saldanha put the ‘Gate ahead on Tuesday, and despite needing a late winner from Lewis Knight, the midfielder says there is still more to come from himself.
“I set myself high standards. I want to be scoring more league goals as I obviously have a few goals in the cup competitions against lower league opposition”.
“I want to be up there challenging Ben (Greenhalgh) and Vance (Bola) for the most goals this season”.
Having made the step up to the Isthmian Premier Division, the 26-year-old says he is adjusting to the jump.
“I think my doubts were about me receiving the ball with my back to goal, however I have worked hard on that now and find myself facing goal more which is good for my targets to score and assist more goals”.
Having now reached the last eight of the Velocity Trophy, Bessey-Saldanha is hoping the club can go onto win some silverware this season.
“The league has always been the priority. But we are in touching distance now and we want to win as much as we can”.
“Winning this trophy was a large part of Swifty’s team talk in the huddle and we managed to do enough to get through”.
The attacking midfielder is enjoying his relationship with the ‘Gate fans and called on them to play their part again on Saturday against Bishops Stortford.
“I have not been at a club with such a passionate fan base as here. They cheer us to the last minute, especially recently when we’ve scored late goals, and we need that again on Saturday”.
With the Blues still in with a chance of making the play-offs, Bessey-Sa;danha is looking for a positive result at the weekend against high flying Bishops Stortford.
“They are a really good side. I think we were unlucky to not get something from the game at theirs. Obviously I missed a great chance in that game so we owe them one”.
“We know we have made things difficult for ourselves in the play-off race by drawing 0-0 with East Thurrock and Leatherhead, however we will keep pushing and see where that takes us”.
