Blues Earn Point On The Road

Report by Jack Waters, Full 'O' Football Podcast

Margate snatched a point at the death against a tough Bishop Stortford as an entertaining encounter finished 2-2 at the R&D Advisors UK Stadium which left the Blues unbeaten in all competitions throughout November.

The first fifteen minutes of the game started intensely, with neither side having a clear-cut chance and both teams unable to keep possession, but the home side had the first half chance of the game, with a strike from the edge of the box that flew wide. Margate’s first half chance came in the thirteenth minute from Ben Greenhalgh’s teasing ball into the box which found Korrey Henry’s head but unfortunately for The Gate, the header didn’t have the power and fell at the feet of the Stortford’s defender who cleared without any danger.

Margate found their attacking instincts, as Sam Blackman’s driving run played in Korrey Henry whose weak scuffed shot was easily collected by Jack Giddens. The first half continued to be a tight encounter, with both sides battling to get a grip on the game.

The home side gave their all to grab the first goal of the game, as Darren Foxley had a great strike outside the box just a whisker wide of Margate’s goal, which shortly followed by three consecutive corners, which Harry Hudson’s heroic defending, and Daniel Jinadu’s brilliant goalkeeping kept the game scoreless going into the half time break, as the hosts finished the half the stronger team.

The Gate came out of the block in the second half, as a long ball found Korrey Henry who broke the offside trap and slid the ball to Cameron Brodie who slotted it past Giddens, to put Margate ahead within the first minute of the second half. The hosts struck back instantly, as a fierce shot was parried by Daniel Jinadu, and Jack Thomas reacted the quickest to put the game back to level terms in the 48th minute.

Heading into the 60th minute, both sides had the chances to grab the lead, as an Oliver Peters’ curling effort from a freekick went wide of the post, with Margate moments later hitting the post with skipper Ben Greenhalgh driving down the right-hand side, dropping his shoulder with a beautiful strike hitting the woodwork, before the home side cleared the ball away.

With twenty minutes remaining, Daniel Jinadu once again showed his quality, with another top save to keep the score level, but three minutes after, Bishop Stortford took the lead, as Frankie Merryfield pinched the ball and attacked the Margate defence and struck a powerful shot past Jinadu.

Margate pushed in the last ten minutes, and found the breakthrough, with seven minutes to go as a lovely delivery from Greenhalgh was met by Henry who initially saw his header saved but he reacted quickest to poke the ball home to earn the ‘Gate a 2-2 draw.
