Faversham Town (A) - 27th September 2022

By Josh Cole

It’s Kent Senior Cup action tonight as Margate travel to Salters Lane to take on Faversham Town in the first round. The winner of this tie will take on Sheppey United or Cray Wanderers in the second round at home.

Last Time Out: Margate were defeated 5-2 at the weekend by Enfield Town at Hartsdown Park. Margate opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Cameron Brodie scored again from outside the box, this time drilling a low shot into the bottom corner. This lead would only last two minutes however as Enfield would equalise through Wraynel in a bit of a chaotic goal to concede for the ‘Gate. Two minutes into the second half the ‘Gate would score a second and reestablish their lead through a header from Hudson. Enfield would equalise again in the 56th minute through Joseph Payne who connected beautifully with the ball, and it flew into the bottom corner. Disaster struck Margate as they saw their lead evaporate and turn into a 3-2 lead for Enfield within two minutes as Coker, who had been threatening all game, bundled the ball into the corner in the 58th minute. The visitors began to control the game and in the 70th minute a cross from Coker was headed into his own net by Harry Hudson. Enfield were not done there as they scored the fifth in the 78th minute, and this goal was the pick of the bunch. Bilal Sayoud cut inside from the right and curled a left foot shot into the top corner, ultimately putting the game to bed.

Andy Drury said it was “hard to digest” as Enfield walked away with the points. Here’s how he summed up the game. “It’s hard to digest really at the moment how we lost that game 5-2, I think first half, first 55 minutes really, I thought we were outstanding, probably the best we’ve played all season, we go 2-1 up and then they score from a set play when we had been dealing with their aerial threat previously, we didn’t deal with the set piece and they equalise, then they score another deflected cross, it was a little bit unlucky and then we haven’t got tight enough for a couple of goals, it’s disappointing but for 65 minutes (including the last ten minutes), we were the better team but to come away losing 5-2 from that game is hard to digest”.

This latest result now sees Margate drop to 16th place in the league on eight points, two wins, two draws and three losses. Our opponents, Faversham Town, have so far struggled as they sit 18th in the Isthmian South East Division, with one win and five losses from six games.

The last time Faversham and Margate met was in pre-season this year as Margate ran out 3-1 winners.

In last year’s Kent Senior Cup, Margate made it to the quarter-finals after beating Cray Valley 5-0 in the first round, then beating Gillingham CC on penalties in the second round but then losing 4-2 to eventual winners Dartford. Faversham Town were knocked out in the first round on penalties against Hythe Town.
