Margate bounced back in emphatic fashion under the lights at Hartsdown Park with a thrilling 4–2 victory over a determined AFC Whyteleafe side. A superb all-round team performance — featuring four well-taken goals and a standout display from Jack Peters — ensured ‘Gate secured all three points and climbed to 6th in the Isthmian League South East table.
The hosts started with real purpose and intent, almost opening the scoring within minutes. Ben Greenhalgh, donning the number nine shirt, forced a fine early save from Whyteleafe keeper Hill with a strike from distance. Moments later, a dangerous delivery from Greenhalgh found Peters, whose effort across goal was tipped around the post by Hill.
However, Margate were reminded of Whyteleafe’s threat when Moses Emmanuel broke through on the counter-attack, but Tom Wray produced a solid save to keep things level.
The breakthrough came just before the break. After a sustained spell of possession, Greenhalgh was taken out as he delivered a cross to the far post, and the referee pointed straight to the spot. Club captain Harry Hudson stepped up and confidently buried the penalty into the bottom left corner, sending Hill the wrong way to give Margate a deserved lead.
Margate came flying out of the traps in the second half and quickly doubled their advantage. Jack Peters, instrumental throughout, drove to the byline before cutting the ball back for Greenhalgh, who crashed it home from close range to make it 2–0.
As the game opened up, both sides pushed for the next goal. It was Margate who struck again on 70 minutes, with Peters once again at the heart of the action. After expertly bringing the ball under control on the edge of the box, he unleashed a stunning volley into the top corner — a goal worthy of any highlight reel — and appeared to put the game beyond doubt.
But Whyteleafe weren’t finished. A slip at the back allowed Emmanuel to capitalise, slotting past Wray to reduce the deficit and give the visitors a lifeline. Sensing momentum, Whyteleafe pushed forward and found a second from a late corner, as substitute Daniel Bennett netted to make it 3–2.
Margate, however, had the final say with a goal with just two minutes left. Substitute Louie Atkins produced a moment of individual brilliance, weaving past two defenders before curling a low shot into the far corner to seal a memorable 4–2 win and spark jubilant celebrations behind the goal.
Margate now look ahead to another home fixture this weekend as they take on high-flying AFC Croydon Athletic.
