Margate make the trip to East Sussex this afternoon looking to bounce back after a difficult week that saw them suffer two narrow defeats.
Last Saturday’s controversial 1-0 home loss to AFC Croydon Athletic in the league was followed by a spirited 3-2 defeat to Charlton Athletic’s U21s in the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday night at Hartsdown Park.
The league setback, influenced by some debatable officiating, leaves the ‘Gate sitting 9th in the Isthmian South-East Division. Today’s hosts currently occupy 6th place, despite falling to a heavy 6-3 defeat away at Deal Town earlier this week.
Eastbourne Town remain unbeaten at home this season, collecting 10 points from a possible 12 at The Saffrons. By contrast, Margate are still searching for their first away league win of the campaign, having taken just three points from five matches on the road.
Manager Ben Greenhalgh is hopeful that several key players are nearing a return to action. Kieron Agbebi is expected to be available for selection, while Lewis Knight and Ronnie Vint could also feature in the matchday squad.
The ‘Gate will take confidence from last season’s meetings with today’s opponents, having done the double over them. Margate recorded an emphatic 4-0 win at Hartsdown Park in October before earning a 4-2 victory away in March, with goals from Louie Atkins, Sam Blackman, Ben Greenhalgh, and the now-departed Ben Allen.
The only other competitive meeting between the sides came back in 1975, when Margate claimed a 2-0 win in an FA Cup tie.
