Women Secure Convincing Win Over Meridian

Margate Women close in on third place after defeating Meridian in a convincing 8-0 win on the road.

The ‘Gate made the journey to Chatham on Sunday afternoon where they faced Meridian in their penultimate league fixture.

A strong Margate side looked as though they were ready to put recent weeks behind them as they started the game with good possession and an attacking threat.

It wasn't long before a depleted Meridian side found themselves sitting deep and defending heavily after a number of shots were fired towards the home goal.

A number of heavy passes, narrowly missed shots and great saves led to the game remaining 0-0 at the 34th minute.

In the 35th minute a heavy challenge on Slevin left Margate awarded a penalty kick. Converting from the spot Slevin placed the ball in the bottom left to secure The ‘Gate’s first goal of the afternoon.

Just one minute later and Chapman netted a second to double the Blues advantage.

Shortly before half time an Adams shot looked set for target but a well-timed tap in from Greetham secured the goal and brought the scoreline to 3-0 at half time.

Two minutes into the second half Slevin scored her second before Adams netted a further two inside three minutes. Another from Greetham left three Blues players with the chance of a hat-trick as the side looked to put ensure a fine win.

In the 68th minute Greetham scored her hat-trick as she netted the eighth goal for the side as they completed a convincing win.

The Gate now sit in 4th place level XL Football Club, separated by just a three goal difference as they prepare to face one another next Sunday in the final fixture of the season.
