Latest signing Ben Wells says he’s here to go one further — and he’s got promotion firmly in his sights.
The 25-year-old joins the Blues from Hastings United ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and wasted no time setting out his ambition: help the ‘Gate bounce back up to the Isthmian Premier Division.
“I wanted to be part of a team that’s fighting for promotion,” said Wells. “When I met Ben and Flan, they spoke about the club’s ambitions and the style of play – it really drew me in. I’m absolutely buzzing to be onboard.”
Wells is stepping into a squad full of belief after last season’s strong push — and he’s impressed with the club’s sense of direction.
“To see 14 players staying on after last season shows how well the club is run,” he added. “It tells you that the boys believe in going one step further — and earning that promotion for the club and the fans.”
So, what can ‘Gate fans expect from Ben Wells?
Versatility is the name of the game. Wells is comfortable in multiple roles but is hoping to stamp his mark in a holding midfield spot.
“I like to get on the ball, dictate the play, and get us going on the attack,” he explained. “I see myself mainly as a deep-lying midfielder — but I started out as a centre-back, so I can cover there too if needed.”
Having come through the academies at West Ham and QPR, Wells brings a strong technical foundation — but says non-league football has shaped him into a more complete player.
“The academies taught me the technical side, but non-league taught me how to handle the physical side. You’ve got to adapt. I feel like now I can mix both — I’m a technical player, but I can handle myself physically too.”
Back to business – and back on the pitch
The Blues are back in training this weekend, gearing up for their pre-season opener at Hartsdown Park on Saturday 5th July against Tonbridge Angels. Wells can’t wait to get going.
“I’m really looking forward to meeting the lads this weekend, and then seeing some of the Margate fans at the open training session on Tuesday night. They’ve already made me feel really welcome.”
“Once you’re back out there, the games come thick and fast – and I can’t wait to start winning football matches for this club.”
Eyes on the fixtures — and eyes on the prize
With the Isthmian South-East Division fixtures expected in mid-July, Wells knows there’ll be some key games — but insists Margate’s focus will be one game at a time.
“There’s definitely some strong sides this year — Sittingbourne, for one, will be right up there. And of course the local derbies always get the fans going. But for us, it’s about focusing on each game, doing the job, and seeing where it takes us.”
